A new volume from Edward Elgar Publishing, Handbook of Research Methods for Corruption Studies, edited by Michael Johnston and published on 23 June 2026, features a chapter authored by former GI ACE Director Professor Paul M. Heywood and GI ACE Researcher Devi Pillay.
The Handbook provides a comprehensive assessment of the current state of corruption studies, examining methodological advances, gaps in knowledge, and priorities for future research. It asks four central questions for the field: what we want to do, what questions we should ask, how and where we should look for answers, and where research should go next?
Heywood and Pillay’s chapter, The Sector Focus Remediation Action (SFRA) approach, details a sector-based approach to tackling corruption in organisations and institutions developed by Heywood himself alongside Mark Pyman. It emphasises corruption control as a management problem requiring distinctive sectoral approaches based on detailed experience, knowledge, and feasibility, and provides a framework through which reformers can develop, prioritise, and critically evaluate options for addressing corruption within their sector.
